Abstract

I met Dr. Silvio Schraier during my Nutrition residency 40 years ago; from then on, we maintained a close friendship that lasted until his recent passing on December 26, 2025.

He always told me about his time at the Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires, which set him on the high level he later achieved in medical school. He graduated in 1980 and immediately began his clinical rotations at the Argerich Hospital, where he gravitated toward specializing in Nutrition and Diabetes.

He became a renowned expert in Nutrition, and specifically in the area of lipids, distinguished by the numerous lectures he gave in diverse settings throughout Argentina and Latin America. He instilled evidence-based knowledge in a vast number of students and disciples from different courses and programs, who have reaped the benefits of what they learned and recognized him as their mentor. In truth, he was a Master in every sense of the word, both in Medicine in general and in Nutrition in particular. He earned this recognition not only from his students but also from his peers, who always turned to him for difficult and controversial cases.

Silvio had the hallmarks of a good person: transparent, fair in his judgments, always with the right words, an optimistic outlook in the face of difficulties, possessing a sharp wit and a broad general knowledge. One could talk to him about the most diverse topics.

For me, he was a brother for life, a dear friend with whom I shared so many experiences, along with our other partner, Eduardo Esteban, a cardiologist also specializing in lipids and cardiovascular prevention, but especially in the Nutrition Specialist Medical Program at the Barceló Foundation, which we led from 2010.

Silvio loved life, and especially his family: his lifelong partner Diana; his daughters Brenda and Nadia; and of course, his little granddaughter Sofía. He leaves an indelible mark on them. His untimely departure is unjust and leaves a deep void in our lives.
