Abstract

People with diabetes mellitus (DM) have a higher risk of infections and unfavorable clinical outcomes, particularly when poor metabolic control, obesity, cardiovascular, renal, or pulmonary disease coexist. In this context, vaccination is a high-impact preventive intervention that should be integrated into routine DM management.

Beyond preventing infectious diseases, vaccination can help reduce metabolic decompensation, hospitalizations, and events associated with preventable infections. However, vaccination coverage in adults remains insufficient. Among the most significant barriers are lack of awareness, lack of medical indication, and missed opportunities during interactions with the healthcare system.

The objective of this presentation is to review, from a practical perspective, how to incorporate the assessment of vaccination status into daily consultations. The challenge is not only knowing which vaccines exist but also ensuring that the recommendation effectively reaches the patient.
