Type 2 prediabetes (T2PD) is a high-prevalence condition that poses a significant public health challenge. Much like type 2 diabetes (T2D), it has an insidious onset and affects millions of individuals worldwide. Beyond its potential progression to T2D, this condition is intrinsically linked to a high risk of developing both macro - and microvascular complications. This suggests that the distinction between T2PD and T2D may currently be based on an arbitrary threshold within the dysglycemia continuum, ranging from normal glucose levels to advanced stages.
We must emphasize the need for early detection and intervention in both pediatric and adult populations, primarily through lifestyle modifications and potentially with pharmacological treatments that have demonstrated efficacy in well-designed studies. Evidence supports that chronic complications and multi-organ involvement can occur from early stages, regardless of whether there is progression to T2D.
