Abstract

For decades, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) has been the reference biomarker for assessing chronic glycemic control in people with diabetes mellitus (DM). Following an international consensus reached over the last decade, its utility as a diagnostic criterion for both DM and prediabetes has gained particular significance. This review examines the evolution of HbA1c usage, its biochemical basis, measurement and standardization methods, and the evidence both supporting and challenging its diagnostic value. It highlights the marker's analytical and clinical advantages, as well as limitations stemming from biological, methodological, and contextual factors—particularly in middle-income countries.
